Prioritizing Sustainability

A windwill and a CO2 cloud balancing on the earth

The electronics industry, long associated with rapid technological advancements, is undergoing a transformative shift towards environmental sustainability. As the world becomes increasingly environmentally conscious, major players in the electronics sector are recognizing their responsibility and the need to align their practices with global sustainability goals.

A key focus for many electronics companies is the reduction of carbon emissions throughout the lifecycle of their products. From manufacturing to end-of-life disposal, companies are exploring innovative ways to minimize environmental impact. This includes adopting energy-efficient manufacturing processes, using eco-friendly materials, and designing products with a longer lifespan and easier to recycle.

Furthermore, the computer vision industry is actively engaging in research and development to create more energy-efficient devices. From single camera modules to entire machine vision systems, advancements in technology are enabling the production of products that consume less power without compromising performance.

Collaboration across the supply chain is also becoming increasingly common within the electronics industry. Companies are working closely with suppliers to ensure responsible sourcing of materials, ethical labor practices, and reduced environmental impact. This collaborative approach fosters a culture of sustainability that extends beyond individual companies to create a more significant industry-wide impact.

Our investment in a greener future

Active Silicon and our sister company, Steatite, under the Solid State plc umbrella, are standing behind our steadfast commitment to reducing carbon emissions.
The group has devised a comprehensive Carbon Reduction Plan that encompasses various aspects of our operations. Here are the key components of the plan, enabling Active Silicon to actively contribute to a greener future.

Minimizing CO2 emissions from electricity use

We recognize the importance of minimizing carbon emissions from electricity consumption and have implemented a two-fold strategy to achieve this goal. Firstly, by recognizing and eliminating unnecessary energy consumption, for example by conscientiously switching off electrical equipment when not in use. Secondly, when considering new electrical equipment, the company prioritizes options with minimal environmental impact, unless compelling business reasons dictate otherwise. This dual approach showcases a commitment to both efficiency and sustainability.

Balancing gas usage for optimal environmental impact

Ensuring comfortable working conditions while minimizing carbon emissions is a delicate balance that Steatite and Active Silicon have successfully achieved. By maintaining adequate, yet not excessive, workplace temperatures and optimizing warm-up times, the company reduces CO2 emissions associated with the use of gas. Steatite has committed to change to electric heat-pump heating in all Business Units if there is no low carbon alternative for gas for heating by 2035.

Reducing the carbon footprint from company vehicles

Solid State plc recognizes the impact of its company cars on the environment and has taken proactive steps to minimize CO2 emissions from company vehicles. This involves not only reducing the average emissions of the cars but also exploring alternative travel options where feasible. By actively seeking ways to decrease the number of company miles traveled, we are contributing to a more sustainable transportation model.

We have also recently introduced an electric car purchase scheme to help employees in the adoption of EVs, so personal vehicles are also reducing their impact on the environment. After 2040 we will only authorize business miles in private vehicles where the private vehicle is electric.

Adhering to the waste hierarchy for responsible waste management

To minimize CO2 emissions from the processing of waste, Solid State plc adheres to the waste hierarchy. This involves prioritizing waste reduction, reuse, and recycling over disposal. By implementing responsible waste management practices, the company showcases a commitment to a circular economy and reduced environmental impact.

Shifting from airfreight to sea freight for sustainable logistics

Recognizing the environmental impact of airfreight, Active Silicon and Steatite collaborate with customers to transition from airfreight to sea freight whenever operational constraints allow. Additionally, the company explores options to purchase closer to business units, further reducing the need for air transportation. This strategic shift showcases a dedication to sustainable logistics and a greener supply chain.

Setting an example

Active Silicon and the wider Solid State group are setting a commendable example in corporate sustainability with our comprehensive Carbon Reduction Plan. We currently project that carbon emissions that we now include in our carbon accounting will decrease from 708.7 tCO2e in 2023 to 511.2 tCO2e by the end of FY28. By addressing electricity use, gas consumption, vehicle emissions, waste management, and logistics, the company is actively working towards a more sustainable future. As businesses worldwide strive to reduce their environmental footprint, we’re proud of our commitment to introduce better and cleaner working practices.
