Driving the Future of Machine Vision
The International Vision Standards Meeting (IVSM) is underway in Ottawa, Canada for the Fall 2026 episode.
This bi-annual meeting of engineers and standards specialists from organizations around the world drives work on the continued development of machine vision standards.
Our CTO, Chris Beynon, is chairing the technical committee working on the CoaXPress standard. This is particularly exciting as the specification of CoaXPress v3.0 is being formulated.
CXP v3.0 is the next major evolution of the high-speed interface standard used to connect machine vision cameras to frame grabbers. The main developments are:
- Higher speeds: adds 25 Gbps per connection, compared with 12.5 Gbps in CXP v2.0/2.1
- Coax and fiber: integrates CoaXPress over Fiber (CoF) into the main standard, so 25 Gbps operation can be supported over both coaxial and optical connections.
- Faster triggering: improves trigger performance, including sharing triggers across connections in multi-link CXP systems.
- Forward error correction: introduces support for detecting and correcting certain transmission errors, particularly important as fiber transmission rates increase.
In summary, CXP v3.0 is about more bandwidth, greater flexibility between copper and fiber, and improved performance for increasingly demanding high-speed imaging systems.
The meeting also involves a PlugFest – a valuable opportunity to establish that products from different manufacturers genuinely interoperate, rather than standards existing purely as theoretical specifications.
We’ll report on the progress in due course.
